'Expelling A Demon' 1995-2003, oil & acrylic on khadi paper, 22 x 30ins

This exhibition has been selected thematically, the theme being reflected in the title: A Time of Demons. Most of the work is new although some of the paintings were started more than a decade ago and only recently completed.

The idea which unites all the paintings is the impulse to make a monument out of a moment in time, each moment containing a multitude of elements; aspects of the past and present; different cultures; different landscapes. These elements meet and glide through little chunks of our time; how they act on and against each other is the subject of the paintings.

Paul Gopal-Chowdhury was born in India in 1949 and brought up in England where he studied at Camberwell (1967-68) and the Slade School of Fine Art (1968-73). His work has been exhibited regularly in London. He was awarded the Gregory Fellowship in 1975, and exhibited in the Hayward Annual in 1979 and also at the Serpentine Gallery in the same year. In 1983-84 he was artist in residence at Gonville and Caius College and Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge.

A catalogue of the Exhibition is available. Please contact the Gallery to obtain a copy.
