Drawing is central to Camp’s practice. He draws constantly from life in the studio and makes studies of people and places on his travels to the south coast and around London which then become the principal subject of his paintings: lovers on a cliff top against a light-filled sea or on the banks of the Thames, soaring figures over Beachy Head or happy idlers in a park or on the beach, and all painted in a fresh, loose manner that blends practice and spontaneity often referred to as ‘the Camp dab’. Jeffery Camp, now in his eighties, has had regular exhibitions in London since his first one-man show in Helen Lessore’s Beaux-Arts Gallery in 1959 and his work features in both public and private collections includingTate Britain. He is a Royal Academician and also an author of distinction with his two immensely popular books, Draw (1981) and Paint (1996). Accompanying the exhibition is a 22 page catalogue with text by Jeffery Camp and 19 colour plates that can be obtained from Art Space Gallery.
